Chris Mrosko in his book Building Dioramas quoted Sheperd Paine who urged
modellers who spend an inordinate amount of time on their models to devote more
time and energy to the bases on which they are displayed. “The base forms a
frame of your diorama picture…and as you would not put a Rembrandt in a dime
store frame, neither should you put your model on a hunk of scrap lumber”.
The dioramas shown in this book are amazing. The detail and realism of the
dioramas really show up the detailed work on the models that the dioramas are
framing. Nothing is overlooked from the rubble of a war scene to the weathering
on the barrel of a gun down to the rust on a jeep. Although the book is written
around the military scene any modeller will be able to transfer the techniques
to other scenes and situations and together with the great colour photographs
will appreciate the detail that can be added to these works of art.
Building Dioramas is a must for any modeller and I would recommend
this book.
